NEW LIBRARY OPENS

In late July, Booth College took possession of its new library at 290 Vaughan Street, just a two-minute walk from the main campus building. Housed in a completely renovated 10,000 square foot space, the new library will serve the needs of Booth College and The Salvation Army’s new Winnipeg College for Officer Training. The design of the Library provides ample space to accommodate the current collection, enhanced study space for students, a café, computer work stations, group study space and a meeting room.

CFOT/BOOTH COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED

The Salvation Army opened its new College for Officer Training in Winnipeg in September. The CFOT welcomed 21 new cadets for officer training. The partnership between Booth College and the CFOT provides efficiencies and synergies in the educational ministries of the Army in the Canada and Bermuda Territory. Cadets take some of their courses with Booth College faculty and students and some with CFOT staff. All courses are approved for Booth College credit.

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Bonnie Bryant (Social Work) will attend a national Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics workshop in Ottawa. The workshop will provide an orientation to the new social work code of ethics.

The College has welcomed a new part-time instructor in Social Work. Melanie Neufeld is working primarily with the field education program for social work students, but will also have some classroom responsibilities.

Dr. Donald Burke, Vice President and Academic Dean, has written a profile of Dr. Gordon Harland (1920-2003) who taught at Booth College for many years after his retirement from the University of Manitoba. The article was written for publication in Touchstone, a Winnipeg-based journal.

Dr. Roy Jeal, Professor of Biblical Studies, will be presenting a paper entitled “Pre-Creation Discourse in Colossians” at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Philadelphia in November.

Faculty Promotions: Dr. Roy Jeal has been promoted to Professor; Major Brenda Smith has been promoted to Assistant Professor.

FACULTY POSITION OPENINGS

The College seeks to fill three faculty positions for the 2006-2007 academic year. There are two positions available in Social Work and one in Sociology, with an emphasis on urban studies. Contact dburke@boothcollege.ca for more information.

2005 GAT SCHOLARSHIPS SERVE OFFICERS IN 17 COUNTRIES

Sixty-six Salvation Army officers from seventeen countries received scholarships from the Canada-Bermuda Territory in 2005 for university level study with Booth College. They enrolled in six courses: Intro to Old Testament, Intro to New Testament, Wesleyan Distinctives, Professional Ethics for Ministry, Introduction to Social Work, and Introduction to Officership.

NEW GAT SCHOLARSHIP COURSES SET FOR MAY 2006

The Canada-Bermuda Territory’s commitment to Booth College as an international resource for The Salvation Army continues. Building on the success of the first round of GAT Scholarships, a new cohort of officers from Grant Assisted Territories is being developed with plans to start studying on-line in May 2006. The official announcement and application details will be circulated internationally by December 1, 2005. For more information, contact amesidor@boothcollege.ca.

2nd MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE COHORT STARTS MAY 2006

With the first cohort in the Management Certificate program putting their finishing touches on their final projects, Booth College plans to launch a second cohort in May 2006. The program is designed for officers who are in, or about to enter, entry level management appointments. This innovative case-based program involves two one-week intensives (May 2006 and May 2007) followed by six month online group study periods. It has proved very popular even with more experienced officers looking to “refreshing” their management/leadership skills. This 18 credit program may be taken independently or as part of a degree completion program. For more information, contact jdyck@boothcollege.ca.

BOOTH COLLEGE AT CRESTMONT (California) IN MAY 2006

Booth College will offer its first courses in the U.S.A. Western Territory at the Crestmont Campus (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) in May 2006. Course details are being finalized and will soon be available on the Booth College website at www.boothcollege.ca.

BOOTH COLLEGE & SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY PARTNER WITH SOUTH AMERICA WEST

Booth College, in partnership with Simon Fraser University's Centre for Online and Distance Education, has just completed a feasibility study in the South America West Territory that examined the territory's plans for distance education. The long term objective is to help this geographically-challenged territory build a distance education system that will support its leadership development program. This project will also act as a catalyst for the development of Spanish language curricula from a Wesleyan-Salvationist perspective. The partnership is the first stage of implementing a new framework for officer continuing education in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. For more information, contact jdyck@boothcollege.ca.
