Is The Salvation Army Just Tinkering?
Graeme Smith wonders if the Army has become ineffective in spiritual warfare. He paraphrases William Booth’s famous, “While Women Weep”* thusly:
While women weep, as they do now, I’ll pat them on the shoulder;
while little children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll pay the professionals;
while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll leave it to the chaplains;
while there is a drunkard left,
while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets,
while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll sit in my nice little hall;
and sing to block them out!

*The Original Booth quote:
“While women weep, as they do now, I'll fight; while children go hungry, as they do now I'll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I'll fight, I'll fight to the very end!”
Comments
I have to say that I, at times, have felt the same exact way. However, and most unfortunately, there are bad apples on every tree. It is sad to me that the bad apples of the army have given the entire "tree" a bad rap. There are salvationists out there who love the Lord and don't sing as loud as they can to drown out the poor. They genuinely want to help those in need.
