The Salvation Army in Poland Granted Official Registration as a Church

THE Salvation Army has been officially registered as a church in Poland. It was added to the country's register of churches on 21 June and official confirmation of this step was given by the authorities on 12 July. The recognition followed a long and often difficult process which threatened The Salvation Army's future work in Poland.

Colonel Vibeke Krommenhoek (Project Warsaw Team Leader) writes: 'We knew last year that this would not be an easy task, because of all the strict legal requirements, but we believed this was what we needed to do – to register as a church and not as anything else. The reason for this, as we see it, is that we are fundamentally a church with a social profile, and not a humanitarian organisation with church activities. Secondly, we believed the registration was a priority in order to be effective in our mission and an equal partner with other churches in Poland.

'Many people both inside and outside The Salvation Army have worked and prayed hard to accomplish this result. It has been amazing and wonderful to discover several important people both in the realms of politics, such as President Chirac of France, and religion, such as a number of Roman Catholic bishops (both in and out of Poland), who have been willing, on our request, to question the Polish authorities on their refusal to register us the first time.

'[We] have more than one million soldiers we can call on to pray. Whether they all prayed for our legal challenges in Poland to be solved, I will never know. But some did and this was sufficient, which calls for one more hallelujah! ... We surely give God the glory for accomplishments that serve and extend his Kingdom, but Scripture assures us that the dedication of the believers and their faithfulness to Christ’s mission matter too.'

New Army Blog on the Block

Commissioner Joe Noland (Rtd.) is going to be sharing from his experience at Slightly Irregular. He is beginning a series called “Management VS Leadership which

“…is directed toward young officers who may one day hold top leadership positions in TSA. If you are already there, ignore what I have to say because the culture that spawned you has undoubtedly cemented your thinking on these issues and reading on will only raise your blood pressure (I don’t want to be party to that). However, if you are one of those rare individuals who can embrace change by gracefully accepting the inevitable (changing generational cultures) then, by all means, continue to read on.”

I assume that “Slightly Irregular” refers to the frequency of posting. However, I am sure what Joe Noland has to say will be anything but regular.

The National Post on The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was profiled by the National Post on July 15.

According to a recently released Statistics Canada study, individual Canadians donate an average of just $400 to charity per year, an unconscionably low sum for a nation as wealthy as this. The rate of volunteerism is also surprisingly small. In order to spur a more philanthropic outlook, the National Post is highlighting Canadian charities that are deserving of our readers' donations or volunteer time. In today's installment we profile The Salvation Army.

An Army Moving Forward, Report from Forward 2006

Further to my previous post, Forward from Here:

General John Gowans (Rtd), Commissioner Gisèle Gowans, territorial leaders, 450 registered participants, workers and the Holy Spirit gathered for Forward 06 in Red Deer, Alberta. From the east and the west they came to be inspired, to celebrate the past and to move forward to impact our community today. From Whitehorse and Iqaluit, Vancouver, Montreal, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto and all across Alberta, even from Newfoundland and from as far away as Scotland, they came for a blessing and were not disappointed.

Forward from Here

Just returned from Red Deer where we spent the weekend at Forward. It was great to listen to retired General John Gowans, one of the Army's finest speakers. It was also a chance to catch up with old friends, some of whom I haven't seen in a couple or so decades.

I was taken by the number of Sally Ann bloggers who were in attendance.

We have a lot of Salvation Army bloggers in the Canada and Bermuda Territory (which has its own blog) and a lot of those right here in Alberta.
