The World for God

The world for God! The world for God!
There’s nothing else will meet the hunger of my soul.
I see forsaken children, I see the tears that fall
From women’s eyes once merry, now never laugh at all;
I see the sins and sorrows of those who sit in darkness;
I see in lands far distant, the hungry and oppressed.
But behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary!

Refrain
The world for God! The world for God!
I give my heart! I’ll do my part!
The world for God! The world for God!
I give my heart! I’ll do my part!

The world for God! The world for God!
I call to arms the soldiers of the blood and fire:
Go with the Holy Bible. Its words are peace and life
To multitudes who struggle with crime and want and strife.
Go with your songs of mercy, show Christ in loving kindness,
Make known the sufferings of the cross, the sacrifice of God.
For behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary!

The world for God! The world for God!
For this, dear Lord, give to my soul consuming fire.
Give fire that makes men heroes, turns weakness into might,
The fire that gives the courage to suffer for the fight,
The fire that changes fearing to Pentecostal daring,
The fire that makes me willing for Christ to live or die;
For behold! On a hill, Calvary! Calvary! — Evangeline C. Booth

NEW LIBRARY OPENS

In late July, Booth College took possession of its new library at 290 Vaughan Street, just a two-minute walk from the main campus building. Housed in a completely renovated 10,000 square foot space, the new library will serve the needs of Booth College and The Salvation Army’s new Winnipeg College for Officer Training. The design of the Library provides ample space to accommodate the current collection, enhanced study space for students, a café, computer work stations, group study space and a meeting room.

CFOT/BOOTH COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED

The Salvation Army opened its new College for Officer Training in Winnipeg in September. The CFOT welcomed 21 new cadets for officer training. The partnership between Booth College and the CFOT provides efficiencies and synergies in the educational ministries of the Army in the Canada and Bermuda Territory. Cadets take some of their courses with Booth College faculty and students and some with CFOT staff. All courses are approved for Booth College credit.

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Bonnie Bryant (Social Work) will attend a national Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics workshop in Ottawa. The workshop will provide an orientation to the new social work code of ethics.

The College has welcomed a new part-time instructor in Social Work. Melanie Neufeld is working primarily with the field education program for social work students, but will also have some classroom responsibilities.

Dr. Donald Burke, Vice President and Academic Dean, has written a profile of Dr. Gordon Harland (1920-2003) who taught at Booth College for many years after his retirement from the University of Manitoba. The article was written for publication in Touchstone, a Winnipeg-based journal.

Dr. Roy Jeal, Professor of Biblical Studies, will be presenting a paper entitled “Pre-Creation Discourse in Colossians” at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Philadelphia in November.

Faculty Promotions: Dr. Roy Jeal has been promoted to Professor; Major Brenda Smith has been promoted to Assistant Professor.

FACULTY POSITION OPENINGS

The College seeks to fill three faculty positions for the 2006-2007 academic year. There are two positions available in Social Work and one in Sociology, with an emphasis on urban studies. Contact dburke@boothcollege.ca for more information.

2005 GAT SCHOLARSHIPS SERVE OFFICERS IN 17 COUNTRIES

Sixty-six Salvation Army officers from seventeen countries received scholarships from the Canada-Bermuda Territory in 2005 for university level study with Booth College. They enrolled in six courses: Intro to Old Testament, Intro to New Testament, Wesleyan Distinctives, Professional Ethics for Ministry, Introduction to Social Work, and Introduction to Officership.

NEW GAT SCHOLARSHIP COURSES SET FOR MAY 2006

The Canada-Bermuda Territory’s commitment to Booth College as an international resource for The Salvation Army continues. Building on the success of the first round of GAT Scholarships, a new cohort of officers from Grant Assisted Territories is being developed with plans to start studying on-line in May 2006. The official announcement and application details will be circulated internationally by December 1, 2005. For more information, contact amesidor@boothcollege.ca.

2nd MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE COHORT STARTS MAY 2006

With the first cohort in the Management Certificate program putting their finishing touches on their final projects, Booth College plans to launch a second cohort in May 2006. The program is designed for officers who are in, or about to enter, entry level management appointments. This innovative case-based program involves two one-week intensives (May 2006 and May 2007) followed by six month online group study periods. It has proved very popular even with more experienced officers looking to “refreshing” their management/leadership skills. This 18 credit program may be taken independently or as part of a degree completion program. For more information, contact jdyck@boothcollege.ca.

BOOTH COLLEGE AT CRESTMONT (California) IN MAY 2006

Booth College will offer its first courses in the U.S.A. Western Territory at the Crestmont Campus (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) in May 2006. Course details are being finalized and will soon be available on the Booth College website at www.boothcollege.ca.

BOOTH COLLEGE & SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY PARTNER WITH SOUTH AMERICA WEST

Booth College, in partnership with Simon Fraser University's Centre for Online and Distance Education, has just completed a feasibility study in the South America West Territory that examined the territory's plans for distance education. The long term objective is to help this geographically-challenged territory build a distance education system that will support its leadership development program. This project will also act as a catalyst for the development of Spanish language curricula from a Wesleyan-Salvationist perspective. The partnership is the first stage of implementing a new framework for officer continuing education in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. For more information, contact jdyck@boothcollege.ca.

Hungary: 15 years of rebuilding

On Sunday 16 October The Salvation Army in Hungary looked back on 15 years of rebuilding. Pioneers from Switzerland and Canada met a young, growing Salvation Army in Budapest.

On 3 November 1990, Salvationists in Hungary 'opened fire', not even a year after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Before that, The Salvation Army – 'Az Üdvhadsereg' in Hungarian – had been obliged to stay silent for over 50 years. During that time Salvation Army officers had to cope with the circumstances imposed by the communist regime. They had to look for a job and find a way to maintain their witness in the face of discrimination.

Fifteen years of persistence

With the reopening of the Army's work in Hungary in 1990 the dream of the old Hungarian Salvationists came true, and many of them could still experience some years of the new era.

Meanwhile, officers and comrades from abroad went to work, coming from Australia, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. Persistently and tirelessly they worked, supported by a growing number of Hungarian friends and comrades – and soon, also, by the first Hungarian officers.

A Hungarian celebration

Many of these pioneers celebrated a happy reunion on Sunday 16 October in Budapest. The Zürich Nord Band from Switzerland opened the celebration day with an open-air concert in front of the Keleti train station. The day before they had already been on the road with Hungarian Salvationists, serving in the town of Kecskemét. In the afternoon people gathered at Lemberg utca, where the Rákoscsaba Corps and the Hostel for Women are located.

Hungarian Salvationists led the programme, which included brass musicians from Debrecen and Budapest, reinforced by their comrades from Zürich, a timbrel group, and Roma-music by the Jószefváros Corps – all in all, a real Hungarian Celebration!

Not tram conductors!

Captain Adam Macher (Debrecen) remembered the beginnings: 'When we got on the tram, many stamped their ticket quickly. They didn’t recognize the Salvationists' uniforms and thought we were conductors.'

Also Magdi Oros (Men’s Hostel Dobozi utca) had to get used to the idea of wearing the uniform: 'But when I wore it the first time, my husband fell in love with me anew.' Her husband had been even more sceptical than her. Today he wears the uniform, too, and he keeps telling his wife: 'The Salvation Army was founded just for you!'

Stealing the Devils Tunes

While working among the destitute of London’s notorious East End during the latter half of the 19th century, Salvation Army founder William Booth is said to have heard the bawdy popular songs issuing from the local gin palaces and exclaimed, “Why should the Devil have all the good tunes?”
Why indeed. Almost from its beginnings, the Salvation Army has made music an essential part of its worldwide ministry. The new documentary Salvation Army: Music in Their Souls offers a look at the past, present and future of this proud tradition.
Vision TV presents the Canadian television premiere of this hour-long film on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 10 p.m. ET . The broadcast repeats on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 11 p.m. ET

Free Shooters

Specialling Bureau

Hero George Scott Railton asserted, “We only desire to form and keep up… a body as large as we can of free-shooters, for the express purpose of assaulting with spiritual weapons those… who are still in rebellion against God.”

We, at armybarmy, heartily recommend these free-shooters for your events. We’re in relationship with these primitive Salvationists and have benefited from fighting alongside them.

When you are planning your next event, when you’ve prayed up your purposes and subjects, check out this resource to find the worship leaders and preachers who can provide strong quality Salvationist impact to your group. Because of travel costs, we’ve limited this edition of Free-Shooters to North America.

This service is free to you from us with the intention of strengthening the Army continent-wide. Please contact these leaders directly for booking. Feel free to contact us for more suggestions at info@thewarcollege.com

Salvation Army responds to South Asia earthquake

Salvation Army responds to South Asia earthquake

The Salvation Army responded swiftly to the south Asian earthquake which brought death and destruction to north-west Pakistan, India and Afghanistan by mobilising two truckloads of relief supplies ready to travel to the worst-hit region of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir as soon as the roads were cleared of rubble.

In addition to equipment held in store for such an emergency, food, clothing and tents were purchased in Lahore – where supplies were more readily available – and plans were made to drive them to Abbotabad. Salvation Army officers would accompany the trucks and supervise the distribution within a 50-kilometre radius of the town.

The Salvation Army’s aid was assembled in response to a direct plea for help from the British High Commissioner, whose official agent in Lahore is Lieut-Colonel Cedric Sharp, Chief Secretary of the Pakistan Territory.

International Headquarters made $60,000 dollars immediately available to the Pakistan Territory for relief work.

The disaster is the worst in Pakistan’s history. Donations towards The Salvation Army’s South Asia Disaster Fund would be welcomed.

TSA gets a beating at MetaFilter

The Army and other Christian Organisations

No more church AND state, from now on just Church.

“The end of church AND state..from now on just church. [click the listen button] The Salvation Army has just won a court case that says they can hire and fire people based on their religion. Even though the Salvation Army gets a large amount of money from the government. Your tax payers dollars being used to discriminate. Of course this is not the first time the Salvation Army has shown its true colours. Maybe this is a trend. This marks a victory for Bush, if they had lost this ruling his entire faith based program would have fallen apart.”

Fluid 2006 Blog

Fluid 2006

FLUID, an event for youth 13-30, is a component of FORWARD, an initiative of The Salvation Army Alberta & Northern Territories Division. Over one hundred years ago, Christians young and old impacted the world around them. Like water permeates the cracks in a rock, Salvationists permeated their culture and impacted lives for the Kingdom. Permeating. Penetrating. Flowing. FLUID. Our history has set the standard and the bar is high. But how do we move forward from where we've come?
