The Salvation Army has Elected a New General

Commissioner Shaw Clifton, currently the Territorial Commander for the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland, has been elected as the 18th General of The Salvation Army, succeeding General John Larsson, who will retire April 1, 2006.

High Council Nominations Announced

Late Wednesday afternoon the following officers indicated to the President of the 2006 High Council, Commissioner W. Todd Bassett, that they accepted nomination. These nominees are now therefore candidates for the office of General of The Salvation Army:

Commissioner Shaw Clifton
Commissioner Israel L. Gaither
Commissioner Hasse Kjellgren
Commissioner Carl Lydholm
Commissioner M. Christine MacMillan

In addition to the above names, the following officers were also nominated but declined to accept nomination:
Commissioner Linda Bond
Commissioner Phillip Needham

The High Council is now adjourned until Friday in order to give the candidates time to prepare their speeches and their answers to the questions prepared by the Questions Committee.

High Council Welcome and Farewall to the Larssons

The webcast of this event from the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster, London, is in five parts:



Part 1 (28:12)
Contents: Entry of the General and Commissioner Freda Larsson, the Chief of the Staff and Commissioner Eva D. Gaither and members of the 2006 High Council – congregational song 'We're an Army' – Prayers led by an international group of young people – greeting from Commissioner Shaw Clifton, Territorial Commander, United Kingdom Territory – congregational chorus 'All over the world'.


Part 2 (47:51)
Contents: Focus on the worldwide Army (the five zonal International Secretaries present a picture of the Army's outreach to the world) – massed songsters sing 'Old Time Religion Medley' (arr. Mark Hayes) – Commissioner Hope Mungate is a representative speaker from High Council – choric Bible reading 'As One' by members of High Council – congregational song 'As One' (words by Colin Fairclough)– prayer for the High Council by General John Gowans (retired), Kevin Larsson leads the massed songsters in his arrangement of highlights from the music of John Larsson, with synchronised video produced by Karl Larsson.


Part 3 (25:36)
Contents: The International Staff Band plays 'The Gowans and Larsson Overture' (Bill Broughton) – spoken salute and prayer by the Chief of the Staff and Commissioner Eva D. Gaither – response by Commissioner Freda Larsson.


Part 4 (33:39)
Contents: Congregational songs in contrast from the musicals (arr. Kevin Larsson) – the General's message.


Part 5 (9:55)
Contents: Chorus 'We'll not turn back' – congregational song 'They shall come from the east, they shall come from the west' – chorus 'The world for God' – prayer and benediction by the General.

FIFTY MORE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GAT OFFICERS
Booth College will award fifty more scholarships to officers in Grant Assisted Territories, mostly in the 2/3 majority world.  Scholarships make it possible for Salvation Army officers to access university level courses on-line and on-site (in country).  For more information, officers should contact their territorial leadership or Booth College. Courses begin in May 2006.  Deadline for application: February 1st.

CRESTMONT & SUFFERN COURSES (USA) IN MAY
Booth College courses offered for officers and others on-site at Crestmont Campus (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and at the Suffern (New York) campus are scheduled for May 2006.  See listing at the end of this e-memo for details.

IHQ PARTNERSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL DISASTER SERVICES COURSE
A special course for those interested in preparing for disaster related service in international settings is being offered in two locations at the Suffern Campus (USA East) in April 2006 and the Crestmont Campus (USA Western Territory) in May 2006.  This is a course offered by Booth College and taught by staff from The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters (London, England).  See details at the end of this e-memo.

SECOND COHORT OF MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM SCHEDULED FOR MAY
The new Certificate in Management program, developed and taught in collaboration with Simon Fraser University, begins at the Winnipeg Campus in May 2006.  It includes the first three (of six) courses to prepare Salvation Army officers for advanced management leadership including Foundations of Management, Financial Management, and Faith Based Leadership.  See details at the end of this e-memo.

COMMISSIONER HASSE KJELGREN TO SPEAK AT GRADUATION 2006
The speaker for the 2006 graduation, April 29th, is Commissioner Hasse Kjelgren, Territorial Commander for The Salvation Army in Sweden.  Commissioner Kjelgren is a highly respected internationalist and has given leadership to the work of The Salvation Army in South America (East), Switzerland, and Sweden.

25th ANNIVERSARY PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY
The 25th Anniversary Committee continues its work preparing for the celebration of Booth College’s 25th anniversary year.  Established in 1982, the college will be twenty-five years old in 2007.  With over 1,600 alumni to date, the anniversary celebration will have a significant focus on celebration activities relevant to alumni and events honoring contributions of significant others over the life of the college.

THREE NEW FACULTY:  SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK
Booth College’s strategic plan calls for the hiring of three new faculty to begin teaching in the Fall 2006.  Searches are underway for two new social work faculty members and a sociologist.  Please direct potential candidates to the college website or contact the Vice President/Academic Dean, Dr. Donald Burke at dburke@boothcollege.ca

RE-ACCREDITATION SITE VISIT SET FOR MARCH 1-3, 2006
Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, the Association for Biblical Higher Education will review the college’s self-study documents (Quality Assurance, Institutional Plan, and Outcome Assessment Plan) and send a team to Booth College March 1-3, 2006 to review the college’s compliance with accreditation standards.  It is anticipated that Booth College’s fifteen year history of accreditation will be extended with formal re-accreditation awarded in February 2007.

SELF-STUDY SETS AMBITIOUS AGENDA FOR BOOTH COLLEGE
The completion of the institutional self-study for ABHE accreditation has led to the establishment of an ambitious agenda for the College over the next several years.  Major initiatives will lead to the development of new programs, the creation of new faculty positions and the improvement of services to students. 

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT TRAINING
In October 2005, two members of the student development staff and eight student leaders traveled to Minneapolis to participate in a conference that focused on enhancing the student development programs of the College.  Upon their return, the conference participants met to discuss how they can implement some of the things they learned in the various workshops.

FACULTY NEWS
Booth College faculty members continue to be active contributors to their disciplines, the mission of the College and community at large…Professor Bonnie Bryant conducted a one-day workshop for social workers in Winnipeg concerning the revised national social work ethics standards…Professor Roy Jeal presented a paper at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in November…Dr. Jonathan Dyck will be participating in an archaeological dig in Israel in June and July with the goal of introducing an archaeology course and archaeological field experience in Israel for Booth College students…Major Brenda Smith continues to write a series of articles about worship in Horizons…Dr. Donald Burke will be speaking at the annual divisional officers’ retreat in the Saskatchewan Division later in January…Dr. Burke will also be conducting a workshop at the National Social Services Conference in Toronto in March…Professor John Berard will be attending a national conference of youth ministry specialists in January…Major Barbara Robinson taught a Booth College course to a class of officers in Santiago, Chile in October.
