January 26th, 2007 - Mennonite-Salvation Army Partnership

At St. Jamestown 614:

“If we cannot prevail with men for God, then we will, at least, prevail with God for men,” said 19th-century British preacher Charles Spurgeon before a congregation of nearly 25,000 at London’s Crystal Palace. He routinely drew 5,000 weekly to his Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit including Prime Minister Gladstone, the royal family, Florence Nightingale, even U.S. General James Garfield (later President).

It’s little wonder Tara Bishop, associate pastor at Toronto’s St. Jamestown’s 614 project, quotes his work at the foot of all her correspondence.

614 St. Jamestown, like its sister project in nearby Regent Park, was established on the concept of Isaiah 61:4—a message of rebuild, restore, renew—a philosophy Tara Bishop shares with her senior pastor, The Salvation Army’s Kevin Moore. Bishop and Moore have come together in this unique approach to inner-city ministry from very different backgrounds. Bishop represents the Mennonite Brethren (MB) while Moore represents The Salvation Army.

September 6th, 2006 - New Book: William Booth in Canada

Between 1886 and 1907 William Booth, General of The Salvation Army, made six visits to Canada. He did so for various reasons: to boost the morale of the new Territory, to promote his ‘Darkest England’ scheme, and to convince Canadian politicians of the value of his emigration plans. For Canadian Salvationists, however, these visits were opportunities to see and hear their leader, who had become one of the world’s leading evangelists. They were not disappointed. His magnetic personality, platform oratory and great sense of humour enthralled Canadians — Salvationists and non-Salvationists alike. In this book R.G. Moyles not only sets the stage for the visits themselves —describing the hectic pace and variety of activities engaged in from St. John’s to Victoria— but attempts to reveal something of the personality of this great man by capturing the essence of his sermons, sharing some of his stories, revealing his personal (often eccentric) habits and showing, through newspaper reports, what the Canadian public thought of Booth and his Salvation Army. It is a fascinating and illuminating journey.

William Booth in Canada is available by writing to R.G. Moyles, 10852-11 Ave. NW, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, T6J 6H9 or by emailing the author at agmoyles@shaw.ca The cost is $15.00 per copy, with a $2.00 shipping charge.

July 7th, 2006 - An Army Moving Forward, Report from Forward 2006

Further to my previous post, Forward from Here:

General John Gowans (Rtd), Commissioner Gisèle Gowans, territorial leaders, 450 registered participants, workers and the Holy Spirit gathered for Forward 06 in Red Deer, Alberta. From the east and the west they came to be inspired, to celebrate the past and to move forward to impact our community today. From Whitehorse and Iqaluit, Vancouver, Montreal, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto and all across Alberta, even from Newfoundland and from as far away as Scotland, they came for a blessing and were not disappointed.

July 3rd, 2006 - Forward from Here

Just returned from Red Deer where we spent the weekend at Forward. It was great to listen to retired General John Gowans, one of the Army’s finest speakers. It was also a chance to catch up with old friends, some of whom I haven’t seen in a couple or so decades.

I was taken by the number of Sally Ann bloggers who were in attendance.

We have a lot of Salvation Army bloggers in the Canada and Bermuda Territory (which has its own blog) and a lot of those right here in Alberta.

Canada and Bermuda Territory Edition

LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
Dr. Jonathan Raymond, who has served as President of Booth College since 1999, is leaving to take up the position of President of Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia (near Vancouver). During his time at Booth College, Dr. Raymond has led the college into new avenues of service to The Army.

The Board of Trustees of Booth College will conduct an international search for a permanent successor to Dr. Raymond. The Board has appointed Dr. Donald Burke to serve as Interim President for the next year. Dr. Burke has been on the faculty of Booth College since it opened in 1982 and for the past six years has served the College as its Vice President and Academic Dean.

GRADUATION 2006
The 2006 Graduation weekend witnessed the largest graduating class in the history of Booth College. More than sixty students received certificates and degrees in the Graduation Exercises. Commissioner Hasse Kjellgren, Territorial Commander of the Sweden and Latvia Territory delivered the Graduation Address to students. For the first time, students graduated from the new and innovative Certificate in Management program that provides Salvation Army officers and employees with valuable management education.

MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM SECOND COHORT
A second cohort of the Certificate in Management program commenced their studies with a six-day session in Winnipeg in May. Follow up work for the three courses introduced at that time will continue over the next six months. A second intensive experience for this cohort will take place in May 2007. If you are interested in being part of the next cohort in the management program, contact us as admissions@boothcollege.ca.

UNIVERSITY ONE PROGRAM – DON’T GET LOST!
The transition from high school to university can be daunting and seem impersonal—with introductory classes that have hundreds of students and taught by professors who are inaccessible. It’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

Booth College, as an Approved Teaching Centre of the University of Manitoba, offers a first year university program that provides students with the opportunity to take UM courses taught by Booth College faculty on Booth College’s campus for UM credit. Then, this credit is directly transferable to almost all universities in Canada and beyond. Small classes taught by senior faculty provide students with a learning experience that is unavailable in most public universities. In addition, to strengthen the first-year experience, Booth College will be offering special assessments, seminars and tutorials for first-year students to help them gain the most from their first-year of university studies. For more information, contact admissions@boothcollege.ca.

IMPACT GAP-YEAR PROGRAM
Booth College has entered into an agreement with Camp Arnes, located an hour north of Winnipeg, to co-sponsor a new intensive gap-year program called IMPACT. Much of the program will be offered at Camp Arnes, located on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, with several individual courses being taught by Booth College faculty. The program also includes an international missions trip. Graduates of the program will receive a Booth College certificate in leadership foundations and will be able to transition seamlessly into the Booth College B.A. program in Youth & Family Studies. For more information, contact admissions@boothcollege.ca.

25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
2006-2007 will mark the 25th year of operation for Booth College. A number of events are being planned for the year. The largest celebration will be during the Graduation weekend in April 2007. General Shaw Clifton and Commissioner Helen Clifton will be our guests April 27-29, 2007 as we host an alumni homecoming and other events to mark our 25th year.
